The natural rush material (Igusa) which the tatami are made from have been used since ancient times in Japan because it has the healing and relaxing effect. The grass contains phytoncides, and the scent of the grass leads to better breathing, similar to the effect when you go to the forest for a healing forest therapy. Studies have also shown that it can improve concentration, which we thought would be ideal to use for yoga.
